Wednesday, May 2nd, 2007The ability to connect via WiMax has been the missing link in the wireless camp. Clearwire now has an approved PC card for WiMax, leading me to think this technology will now take off. Yes, the FCC can be blamed as the bottleneck, but there weren’t any submissions for approval that I’ve looked at. This [...]
EarthLink Pauses On New Muni Wireless Projects
Tuesday, May 1st, 2007This article in Information Week contains so many great sentences, the temptation is to include the entire article. That is not my policy, so I settled for these few sentences that inject reality into the whole Muni-WiFi discussion. The requirement, though, is to visit the website and read the complete article.
EarthLink Pauses On New Muni [...]
Are WiFi Radio Waves Frying Our Brains?
Tuesday, April 24th, 2007I have read several articles about people that claim WiFi makes them sick. I am not sure how much validity their claims have, but enough is happening now that it raises concern.
This article out of the UK brings WiFi and Cellular into the same camp, citing the increased likelyhood of brain tumors for heavy cell [...]
Muni WiFi Subsidies = Financial Disaster
Monday, April 23rd, 2007Financial Disaster is the conclusion of this ninety page report from a study on municipal Internet initiatives. That seems fairly clear.
This study looks at all the forms of municipal broadband Internet access, including self-financed WiFi, and private/public partnerships, such as Earthlink and name any city.
It contains too much information for me to even comment on, [...]
WiFi Security Exploited for Demonstration
Monday, April 23rd, 2007WiFi technology has one great big problem, and exploiting that problem is getting easier, thanks to current hacker tools. The LA Times enlisted the help of Humphrey Cheung to visit a coffee shop and see what information he could sniff.
Within a short time, Cheung was able to give detailed and accurate information about many of [...]
Houston council considers Earthlink wifi contract
Wednesday, April 4th, 2007Today, the City of Houston considers the $2.5 million dollar payment to Earthlink for access to the proposed Muni WiFi network. Since the City Council approved the original idea, there is no reason to believe they won’t approve the money.
Yesterday, the Houston Chronicle had an article about this meeting and the quote I featured below [...]
Houston’s Muni WiFi FREE! (not!)
Monday, April 2nd, 2007Ann Linehan, with blogHouston, discovered that the City of Houston has redefined the word free. Free now means $2.5 Million.
You need to read Ann’s Sunday article to believe it.
UPDATE: look at item 24 on the City agenda, linked from Ann’s article.
Muni Wi-Fi: Not As Good As It Gets
Saturday, March 31st, 2007Olga Kharif links to a report done by several companies interested in the true strength and stability of Muni Wifi networks. These companies did testing on some of the largest deployments and presented their findings at the Muniwireless Dallas conference. What they presented didn’t paint a very pretty picture for the advocates for the Muni [...]
Wireless industry gears up for WiMax
Monday, March 26th, 2007The WiMax Forum is getting close to the specifics that will allow this technology to explode. WiMax overcomes many of the limitations of WiFi and could be the dark horse in bringing wireless Internet access to … well, everywhere. Speed and distance are greatly improved, and that will make it the technology of choice for [...]
As wireless world grows, so does hackers’ playground
Friday, March 23rd, 2007An article in this morning’s Houston Chronicle caught my attention. It seems some are beginning to understand the implications of Muni WiFi projects and how difficult it will be to monitor from many standpoints. I have addressed this dilemma from several directions, not the least of which is the unlawful use of these networks.
The [...]
