The Lovin’ Spoonful’s Music

By Larry Hendrick | June 12, 2007

Lovin’ Spoonful Greatest HitsAhh … there it is! (double click — headphones fill with Summer in the City)

Last night the local PBS station ran a Lovin’ Spoonful retrospective with John Sebestian titled A Lovin’ Look Back. It was fun listening to John tell stories about the 60s and hear the music again.

Funny part … I have The Lovin’ Spoonful Greatest Hits on cassette. It’s packed away somewhere, and … wait, I ripped that to MP3 from the cassette a few years ago. I just have to find … YES!

Nostalgia is a fun thing, especially the music. I don’t really miss much from the 60s and 70s, except the music. Yes, there are Oldies stations, but even they play the Top 40 from that time period, kinda like they do with today’s music.

When was the last time you heard a song on the radio by Iron Butterfly? Steppenwolf? Grass Roots? The Guess Who? (not The Who) The answer is simple. These are not groups played on the radio, you have to own the music.

Here is the last seven songs played by the local Oldies station as I write this article.
Thank You — Sly & The Family Stone
Bad Moon Rising — Creedence Clearwater Revival
Come Together — Aerosmith
Old Fashioned Love Song — Three Dog Night
Still The One — Orleans
Letter — Box Tops
D’yer Mak’er — Led Zeppelin

By listening to the radio, one would think that Bad Moon Rising is the only song CCR played. Same with The Letter by The Box Tops. Yep! Top 40s from the 60s and 70s.

At least I have my old 33LPs and a bunch of cassettes. I guess I better get to ripping.

Oh, and if you’re interested, the program re-airs in Houston Sun, June 17, 12 a.m. - 1 a.m. Don’t they know most of the interested people are in bed by then?
