Deju Vu—The Ford Shelby GT500KR
By Larry Hendrick | April 4, 2007
As the great readers of Business Unusual know, I am lusting after the Shelby GT500. Now a new Mustang is introduced that moves the horsepower up another notch, 540bph. Oh My!
I may have to review and rethink my position on this whole GT500 issue. The ground effects on the new KR are a lot different, so it not likely to be mistaken for a GT500 or a GT. No, it is distinctive in color and look, just like its 1968 cousin the GT500KR.
I remember the GT500KR the first time around, attending Canyon High School as a Junior. They were hot! Standard equipment then was a 428 CobraJet powerplant which Ford conservatively rated at 335-horsepower, but, in testing, it made more than 400-horsepower. Ford dealers sold 1,570 GT500KR models in 1968, 1053 fastbacks and 517 convertibles.
OK. BTW—KR stands for King of the Road.
Return of the King - The Ford Shelby GT500KR - Classic Driver - MAGAZINE - news
To be announced at this month’s New York Auto Show, the latest ‘King of the Road’ from Ford will feature Shelby badging and a 5.4-litre supercharged V-8 producing 540 HP. Called the Ford Shelby GT500KR, in honour of the original 1968 model, the new car will be available for delivery in spring 2008, as a strictly limited edition (of 1,000 units) model.
The modern Shelby GT500KR is based on the standard production GT500, but has a Ford Racing Power Upgrade Pack that boosts engine output by around 40 HP.
