Criticism Mounts in SF Muni Deal

By Larry Hendrick | January 26, 2007

I really find it interesting that Earthlink is just discovering these hurdles in implementing a city-wide WiFi project. I would expect a company selling this product to be completely aware of these issues and, after all the time it took to land this contract with SF, be on top of the situation.

Unstrung - Criticism Mounts in SF Muni Deal - Wireless Networking News Analysis

Sounding a bit like President Bush in “Mistakes were made” mode, EarthLink executive vice president Donald Berryman, speaking at a Wireless Communications Association conference in San Jose Tuesday, acknowledged that the company had underestimated the political hurdles, the difficulty in obtaining rooftop leases, and the density of nodes required to build a network with the advertised coverage and service levels.

You also know, that with these problems cropping up, the prices for access just went up. I guess the digital divide will have to wait a little longer to be bridged.

I wonder if Mr. Berryman is an official spokesman for the company?
