Mesh Goes Third World
By Larry Hendrick | September 15, 2006
It looks like the wireless WANs will get a workout in third world countries before we in the US get all the kinks worked out. This makes perfect sense, since most of the countries that are working on this don’t have any infrastructure in place. Since we have massive amounts of infrastructure, the foothold has been harder to get here, but for some countries, this will be their AT&T moment that will define the future.
Unstrung makes several good points in this article, including the included paragraph.
Despite the publicity surrounding proposed city-wide mesh networks in large cities including Philadelphia and San Francisco, U.S. carriers are taking a wait-and-see approach as profitable business models for wide-area mesh networks have yet to emerge. Several high-profile mesh build-outs in the U.S. have encountered unexpected obstacles: The Philadelphia project, for example, is now not expected to be complete until at least the fall of 2007, more than a year later than originally planned.
