Google offers hosted communications applications
By Larry Hendrick | August 28, 2006
Google announced another product for small businesses that has possibilities. Will it replace an exchange server for a company? No, but that isn’t the intended market for these applications, either. This web-based application package includes, email, calendar, chat and a GUI web page builder.
Google is talking about adding Writely, their web-based word processor, and their web-based Google Spreadsheet to this product mix later this year. Will that be enough enticement you to move your base of operation to web services?
It really will be a case-by-case issue, that will require companies to invest in more robust Internet connections and to install redundant connections with diverse paths, from separate companies. This might be the perfect fit for small companies that can get DSL and Cable to their premises.
One appealing aspect is the junk-mail filtering provided as part of Gmail working with your domain name and all inboxes.
