Rhode Island ready to launch statewide wireless network

By Larry Hendrick | April 29, 2006

Rhode Island has a plan to cover the entire state with Wireless Internet Service, but you have to remember, the entire state of Rhode Island is about the size of Houston. I’ve never been to Rhode Island, so I don’t know about the split of urban and rural there, but another project to watch. The article mentioned that they were using a combination of WiFi and WiMax to do the build-out, and I would like to know what WiMax equipment they are planning to use. This could be an interesting development, since there is no WiMax equipment available in the United States.

Chron.com | Rhode Island ready to launch statewide wireless network:

The smallest state is seeking to become the first to offer a wireless broadband network from border to border. Backers of Rhode Island’s $20 million project say it would improve services and make the state a testing ground for new business technologies. It also comes at a time when the capital, Providence, is stepping up efforts to lure business from Boston, about a 50-minute drive away, where office rents are among the nation’s most expensive. The Rhode Island Wireless Innovation Networks should be fully in place by 2007, providing wireless connectivity throughout state.
