VoIP: My Point Exactly

By Larry Hendrick | November 19, 2005

My post Tuesday was to make this point about the viability of VoIP at this time. For businesses to look at this technology as an option as a replacement for their pots (plain old telephone service) lines is unrealistic. To use VoIP for additional lines for making long distance could be a better plan, but even that comes with pitfalls. We added two VoIP lines for this very thing at the office and on a regular basis, they were unavailable. Down, not usable, no dial tone,… well, you get the point.

Thanks Dwight for additional ammunition to make my point.

TechBlog: The importance of digital diversity

A colleague who lives in the same area said he had just cut the cord with SBC, going with Time Warner’s Digital Phone service. Just a couple of days later, he lost cable TV, his Road Runner Internet and, as a result, his telephone service.

I’ve become a believer in digital diversity — having more than one provider for all your connectivity. Yeah, having just one bill is nice, and there are often financial incentives for bundling services, but you’re basically at the mercy of one company. That business’ service craters, then so does your connection to the outside world.
