High Speed Over Your Gasline?

By Larry Hendrick | November 11, 2005

The future is here, but where are the flying cars? High speed Internet first came over the copper lines used to provide telephone service, then upgraded to fiber. Next was supposed to be EOPL, or Ethernet over power lines, now BBOGL, or broadband over gas line. Technology will continue to evolve and transmorph into something else with time, but new ideas are always worth exploring.

I’m thinking HSIA, or High Speed in Air…just think, nothing to break or short. Just send it over the earth via air…oh wait, we already have wireless. Hmmm…

Gas pipe broadband? | CNET News.com

It may sound nuts today, but a San Diego company called Nethercomm is developing a way to use ultra wideband wireless signals to transmit data at broadband speeds through natural-gas pipes. The company claims its technology will be able to offer 100 megabits per second to every home, which is more than enough to provide voice, video and high-speed Internet access.

Needless to say, there’s a big caveat here: These claims have yet to be tested. Nethercomm has no working products and has not tried the technology in the field.
