I Am Not Alone (Wasn’t Sure Before)
By Larry Hendrick | August 5, 2005
In reading all the different new stories and blogs, I thought I was the only one that thought Muni Wifi was a terrible idea. It appears that I am not alone in this. One of the things I continue to bring up is the actual cost of running the network, not just the initial build out. This story is a month old, but I just discovered it.
The report estimates that the average cost of building and maintaining a municipal wireless network is $150,000 per square mile over five years. According to the report, roughly 50% of current initiatives will fail to breakeven even if the benefit of the initiative is assumed to be $25 per user per month.
