The 6 Month Review on My Palm Tungsten T5

By Larry Hendrick | June 4, 2005

I have had my Tungsten T5 for a full six months now so it must be time for another update. I am still extremely happy with the unit, but there are a few issues to work out.

I have been surprised by the different ways I use the T5 from the Vx. The size and design of each reminds me of the other, but there are many differences that are worth noting.

The Vx was a constant companion for 4 years to provide quick access to all my information. Using DocsToGo, I carried all my Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files with me. Handbase was my brain and held all my databases. Living on Galveston Bay, Tide Tool was a life saver and the regular PIM information kept me on track and on time. I always had all my telephone numbers, even as the number approached 1000 contacts. The device would charge in a few hours and would not need it again for a week or two. The style was attention getting and people would ask about “that in your hand.”

I still use DocsToGo with the Tungsten T5 and carry a lot of documents with me and Handbase is still one of the most used programs on my T5. I still use Tide Tool to keep up with the tides and the sun and moon rises and sets. The battery life on the T5 is fantastic and in the 6 months I have had the unit, I have put it on the car charger or wall charger only about 5 times. I do keep it plugged into the USB sync/charge cable when at my desk and that seems to take care of it.

So, what is different? Pictures, video and MP3s, oh my. Pictures, video and MP3s, that’s it. With the Vx, I didn’t even know I was missing these things, and now I can’t imagine being without it. I can carry a ton of “podcasts” on the built in drive, videos of the Granddaughter and pictures, too. Really, really cool…

What are the problems with the T5? Well, I really only have one problem. I owned the Palm Vx for 4 years and had it crash less times than I can count on one hand. The T5 is not that stable. I only have problems at two different times, at the end of some syncs (not many) and while playing Pocket Tunes. With Pocket Tunes, it is only when I try to bring the screen back up while playing MP3s. For some reason this causes most of my crashes. It does not do it all the time, but several times a week.

I am still glad about the purchase and will continue to enjoy the new features of the Tungsten T5. It is a great device. Now all I need is a 1GB SD card and maybe a SDIO WiFi card. And maybe a bluetooth keyboard, and a…
