Just Wondering

By Larry Hendrick | May 27, 2005

I am fairly new to the whole blogidelphia (city of blogs), but I have noticed an interesting phenomenon at work.

There seems to be an order to what goes on in blogs.
1) someone writes an article
2) a blog refers to it and makes a comment on the article
3) another blog sees that blog and refers to it and makes a comment on the comment on the article
4) another blog see the 2nd blog and refers to it and makes a comment on the comment of the comment about the article

This is the good and the bad about the direction blogs are heading. Some blogs are only there to comment on newspapers (bloghouston.net & the Houston Chronicle are a perfect example of this symbionic relationship).

The good…it is a way to keep people honest and call them on things that one thinks is incorrect or is blatantly wrong. There have been many positive examples of this case and it needs to continue.

The bad…I do not see a lot of original thought coming from the blogging community and that is a shame. Now don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with scenario #1 necessarily, but I think that it becomes more about commenting on the comment than it does about the original story. The original thought seems to be relagated to an after thought, rather than the main focus of the thread.

What disappoints me is that there are some really, really smart people writing blogs, but there is not a lot of depth to what they post on. Obviously, there are exceptions to the rule, but I think that if bloggers want to be thought of as more than just an oddity, they will need to raise the bar on the content.

Is my opinion the last word? No, but maybe a question to be answered.

Have a great day…
