Love/Hate Microsoft

By Larry Hendrick | May 22, 2005

Thursday the 19th of May, the Microsoft Traveling bus was in town and I attended an afternoon Microsoft seminar on mobility. It revolved around access and security and as much as I love/hate Microsoft, they have some really cool stuff coming down the pipe to go with what is already there.

Last year they added the CRM (Customer Relationship Management) solution and they purchased Great Plains for the accounting packages. Now they are releasing a new competitor to QuickBooks Pro in the lower end market and they announced Thursday, they are putting out a POS (Point of Sale) software solution later this year.

What makes this different? It all ties into Microsoft Outlook. One database to maintain for contact management, bookkeeping, and POS and it’s part of Outlook, which most people are already using. On the contact management on the lower end, they have Business Contact Management laid over Outlook. I have not used it, but plan on installing it and looking at it this next week.

I am currently an ACT! user and like the features and what I can do with it. That will be the standard I will have to apply to the BCM software. I did try to install it late Friday afternoon, but did not have success. Sometimes it doesn’t go as planned…

More on this later.
