Learning to Build a Podcast #0.5

By Larry Hendrick | May 14, 2005

My goal for this series is to build a complete tutorial for any beginner to use to begin their own podcast.

The first step in my journey of learning to do a podcast is to start with the ideas and get them organized. Since I think in outlines, I have decided to start with an outline of the project and will use it as a table of contents for the series. Each item should be an individual entry building to the final product being made available on the Internet.

0) Define some terms that will come up in this series
1) Determine the equipment and software to use
2) Do several test recordings
3) Develop my subject matter of the podcast (this is done)
4) Write a script and record the 1st podcast
5) Convert it to the MP3 format
6) Upload it to this blog site
7) Investigate setting it up for an RSS feed 8) Make it available through Podcast software such as ipodder
9) Make a determination of continuing the podcast on a regular basis

I am a technology salesman, but not a technician, so this will be a good challenge. The technical people that do this sort of thing usually say, “oh, this is really easy” and it is…for them, but I do not think that is the case for me.

Setting up this blog with Movable Type was a big challenge that required some help from one of the techs at work. I am quite capable of most things, but what I have found it that most of these things are not documented very well, the terms are not defined and the instructions assume that you know a lot of technical terms and actions. Well, that is not always the case, so this will be a lot of fun to see if I can figure all this out by myself.

Don’t get me wrong, I will use every resource I am able to get to, including: Google, existing podcasters, the techs at work…you name it, but my goal is to do this myself by using the internet and my own knowledge.

We’ll see how this goes…
