Will Someone Give Us All the Facts
By Larry Hendrick | May 6, 2005
I keep reading this same story over and over again. It is from a Gartner Group research study released Monday, May 2nd. I am still waiting for the “rest of the story” because it always comes out a short time later.
Wireless Week - Study: PDA Sector Posts Strong 1Q Growth
The worldwide PDA sector shipped 3.4 million units during the first quarter, which represents the sector’s strongest first quarter on record, according to the latest research coming out of Gartner. Research In Motion (RIM) continues to lead the pack in the handheld market, followed by palmOne and HP.
The shipment of 3.4 million units is a 25 percent increase over the total number of shipments worldwide in the first quarter of 2004. The average selling price of a unit also increased 15 percent to $406.

The desire for wireless e-mail access fueled a 55 percent increase in shipments for PDAs containing WLAN or cellular capabilities, according to Gartner.
RIM performed well during the quarter, increasing its market share to 20.8 percent, shipping 711,000 units. PalmOne, on the other hand, dropped to second place after its market share slipped to 18 percent from 30.5 percent
HP, Nokia and Dell rounded out the top five, garnering 17.6 percent, 9.9 percent and 6.3 percent of the market, respectively.
In Western Europe alone, PDA shipments increased 84.3 percent to 1.3 million units. The U.S. market recorded a 5 percent year-over-year up-tick in shipments, while Asia/Pacific and Japan both posted shipment declines of 2.7 percent and 21.3 percent, respectively.
What they continue to leave out is the fact that the numbers are inaccurate. For some unknown reason, Gartner has determined that all Pocket PCs and RIMs will count towards their numbers, but the number 1 selling unit from Pa1mOne, the Trio, will not count toward their PDA sales numbers.
WHAT?? They do this every quarter in the reports. Supposedly they exclude the Trio because it is a “smart phone” product. So a RIM with internet connectivity for email is a PDA, but a Trio is not…who thinks this stuff up?
They keep predicting gloom and doom for Pa1mOne because of lost marketshare, yet Pa1mOne continues to dominate the market when all the numbers are counted.
Last quarter, when all the numbers were put together, Pa1mOne was far and away the leader in sales for PDAs, and yes a Trio is first and formost a PDA.
Yes, we will have to wait for the rest of the numbers to see who is really the #1 player in the handheld computer market.
