3/27/2005 05:27:00 PM|||Larry||| It is amazing what our State Representatives manage to get done in their very brief time on Capital Hill in Austin. The Texas Legislature meets for several months, every other year. In that short period of time, they are required to pass laws for the betterment of the people of Texas. This is important work and must be met head-on to accomplish in such a short time frame.

This session they must reform the state education funding because a judge ruled the current one unconstitutional. This will have them looking at new methods of taxing the people as well as new methods of distribution to each school district in the state.

Yet, with all that is on their agenda, they have all the time in the world to debate a bill put forth by State Representative Ryan Guillen, D-Rio Grande City, making pan de campo the state bread of Texas. That's right, a state bread debate. Here is the story in the Houston Chronicle

While in Austin last month, I visited the House balcony and watched for a short time, and in 30 minutes, the house handled several resolutions. One made it the official day of the state 5A football champions, another recognized another group, and so the time went. Apparently all the real work is being done in committees and this is not an observable event.

Now I realize that there is a need for the gentlemen to blow off a little steam, but this seems to belittle the real work that awaits.

I wonder if Rep. Guillen has read all the papers on the bills that he is about to vote on? The answer is no, he has others do this, so he can present bills about bread.

What a state...
