Are You a Planner?

June 14th, 2007 · No Comments

People spend more time planning their vacations than they do their lives.” Jim Rohn

I ran across this quote again this morning and it started me thinking. Some people are better planners than others. It’s part of our personalities and individual traits.

Do You Plan

As readers of Motivation on the Run, you show your interest in this type topic by continued reading. Here is my question though, are you a planner or someone that just likes to read about setting and achieving goals?

  • Do you plan your days?
  • How about your weeks?
  • Do you list your goals and post them where they are visible?
  • Do you plan your vacations?
  • Do you have written short range goals (up to one year)?
  • Do you have written long range goals (up to twenty years)?
  • Do you have life goals, and are they written down?

plan-ahead.jpgFunny thing is, if you didn’t plan your vacations, I probably wouldn’t want to ride along. It would quickly digress into a penny hike*. So if you are (or want to be) a leader, and you aren’t a planner, why makes you think I will follow you?

When was the last time you took a day to think about your life and where you want to go? This is such a hard thing to do in today’s world, but is an important component for success.

Leaders

Scott Ginsberg recommends a daily “me” time to get yourself in the right mindset. John Maxwell’s book, The Winning Attitude, is all about getting to the right mindset. Do you see an important trend here? I hope so …

I think these two things go hand-in-hand. Having a right mindset and planning. If you see life as bad, what do you care about planning for the future. In fact, a bad mindset will never lead to a goal oriented, positive, successful life.

Think about it. Someone with a good mindset looks forward to the process of self-inspection and self-improvement. The people around you will notice the difference. Someone with a purpose in life acts different, walks different, and talks different.

How’s your mindset?

*penny hike: at every intersection, you flip a penny, heads—go left, tails—go right.
