Personal Goals as Motivation:
10 reasons for them/11 questions to ask

May 15th, 2007 · 2 Comments

chart-arrow.jpgPersonal goals have always been my biggest motivation. Over trips, money, and prizes, I work harder to reach my goals than any incentive a “boss” can conjure up. I believe that is true of most people.

Why personal goals?

They:

  1. Give us worth!
  2. Bring value to our lives!
  3. Motivate us to improve!
  4. Help us gain perspective!
  5. Help us establish priorities!
  6. Allow us to establish standards/baselines!
  7. Allow us to measure results against the standard!
  8. Allow us to define our values!
  9. Builds map to success!
  10. Stretch our minds to see what is truly possible!

Now let me ask:

  1. How are you goals working for you?
  2. Do you know what they are?
  3. Are they written down?
  4. Do you review them regularly?
  5. Are they narrowly defined?
  6. Are you measuring them?
  7. Are you on track?
  8. What rewards are built in?
  9. Who is holding you accountable?
  10. Do they stretch your abilities?
  11. Are they set higher than last years?

Have you found success yet? You will, if you start!

These questions hurt. I think I know what the answers are. Kinda. Okay, I’ll go write them down this weekend. ;)

Yes Dave, there’s a good reason they hurt. I was asking myself these questions, and some of the answers were wrong.

Sometimes we need a fresh look to get back on track. And it’s easy to blame busy. Busy only has as much time as we give it. Time to prioritize!
