My 33 Random Thoughts While Sitting at My Desk

March 27th, 2007 · 4 Comments

Scott Ginsberg issues challenges at the end of every article he writes. Earlier Scott published an article titled 33 random thoughts I jotted down at the Phoenix airport, and the challenge was to write your own random thoughts article.

It seems my life is full of random thoughts and there is usually nothing to do with them. So I am stepping up to the issued challenge. Not all of them are about motivation, leadership, or selling, but they do qualify as random.

  1. Telling is not Selling!
  2. Ask a question, then truly listen to the answer.
  3. Show you care, don’t say it.
  4. Reading the the gateway to learning.
  5. Ice Cream is your friend. Reward yourself.
  6. Phil Gerbyshak is definitely the Relationship Guru of this age.
  7. Why do sales organization insist on “flinging them against the wall to see who sticks?”
  8. Sales is a learned profession.
  9. Sales is a great profession.
  10. Mentoring is probably one of the most overlooked leadership qualities.
  11. Spelling is hard, but important.
  12. Don’t start answering a question before the questioner is finished asking.
  13. Don’t talk with your mouth full.
  14. Be polite!
  15. What part of NO! don’t you understand?
  16. When was the last time you followed up with a customer on a problem solution? Are they still a customer?
  17. Automated PBX attendants should be banished.
  18. Have you returned that telephone call yet?
  19. People will trust you if they like you. Don’t abuse their trust!
  20. Automated attendant call routing should be banished. (Verizon Communications-Press 385142276552394 if you need help with your phone service)
  21. Trust is hard to gain, but easy to lose.
  22. Don’t talk past the sale.
  23. The last thing to negotiate is your price. (Jeffrey Gitomer and others)
  24. Under promise and over deliver. (everyone)
  25. Automated telemarketers are the worst use of technology ever invented. Don’t do it.
  26. ABC is Always Be Closing. That’s old school, I say ABL—Always Be Listening. You’ll know when they are ready to buy.
  27. Integrity will take you a lot farther than skill. ABH—Always Be Honest.
  28. If you have to ask for a referral, you haven’t dazzled them with your service.
  29. From Scott … Tiger Woods takes golf Lessons. Just think about that for a minute. I love that thought.
  30. Set goals, track goals, achieve goals!
  31. Turn customers into evangelists for you company.
  32. Want to know what your customers don’t like about you or your company? ASK! They’ll tell you.
  33. Want to get referrals? Give referrals!
  34. Bonus! Networking is about getting to know other people, not telling them about you!

Thanks Tim. I think it was a great exercise to work on. I like the link post you put up to all the contributors, I think I will do that as well. I thought they were all good in their own rights. Good stuff.
