Joan Rivers starts her comedy routine asking the question, “Can we talk?” Today on Motivation on the Run, I discuss communication and how we can get better. Not just talking or listening, but communicating.
I begin with Shakespeare and end with three tips on how to determine if you are getting your point across. Shakespeare to listening … how’s that for covering ground?
The first order of business is getting a working definition of communication we can agree on. After all, that will be the beginning of our transfer of knowledge. Here is the definition: Communication is the transmission of information so that the recipient understands what the sender intends. Then I head over to what is meant and how it can be applied.
Every day we have to communicate, and that is completely different than talking … trust me on this one.
Also, since I mentioned mind maps and one of my goals for 2007 (getting more proficient), here is the map I created to put this podcast together. It begins with the concept of better communication and each point covers the main sections. You can click to see the larger image to see the points I discussed on the cast. I would appreciate any feedback on the mind map as well.
Have a fantastic week and I’ll talk to you again soon.
