Personal Mission Statements

September 7th, 2006 · 2 Comments

What is your personal mission statement? What, you haven’t invested the time to work out that small detail of your life? When were you planning on doing it … when it’s too late?

I admit, I am one of those that’s never taken time to think through a personal mission statement. I know, I know … I can hear you all now. “What are you nuts … ?” If asked, I would agree it is important to understand the ultimate answer to the questions, “Why am I here?” or “What is my purpose?”, but it is something I haven’t done beyond the scope of my Christianity.

Of late, I have been putting considerable time into thinking about thinking about, developing one. I just finished David Allen’s, Getting Things Done, and in the past have read Stephen Covey’s, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and each require an answer to the above questions.

In GTD and 7 Habits, the guiding principle is based on your ultimate life goal, yet I have resisted. When determining what goals to work on, the deciding factor is that life goal. They question, “How can you decide what is the most important thing to do now, if you don’t know where you’re going?” That’s a very good question I find difficult to answer.

I am a goal oriented person, but I have never pursued the Personal Mission Statement.

In searching Google for ‘personal mission statement,’ I found tools that help walk you through the process, so I plan to document this process as I search for MY mission statement.

QUESTION:
What is your mission statement? What do you feel is the most important aspect of a personal mission statement? When did you quantify your statement? How’s it working our for you?

Today, I have more questions than answers, but that will change.
