Motivation on the Run

HPCWire has an interview with John E. West, author of “The Only Trait of a Leader, a field guide to success for new scientists, engineers and technologists.” Don’t let the title fool you, Mr. West gives some great answers to great questions that apply to everyone. An example is the following quote.

Technology Leadership Begins With the Individual:

Leadership isn’t about having position, money, power or fame. We are all leading right now and the only question is whether we’re leading on purpose to make things better — even if they are very small things — or if we are leading by accident with no thought to the impact we have on others.

I like the way he puts it … on purpose or by accident. That speaks volumes to me as I think about leadership and what difference it should make in peoples lives. There should be an impact in those around you, if you assume the role of leader, which doesn’t always come with a title.
