Leadership and motivation are difficult concepts to grasp and as proof, look around at all the un-motivated people there are in corporate America today. Management blames the workers and workers blame management. It has become a visious circle that leads to un-productivity. It even pervades our schools and universities, as students sleep through classes or do just enough to get by.
Leadership and motivation are not easy, or there would not be such a craving for it today. I wrote on Leadership 2.0 some time back and I keep thinking that there should be a follow-up; Motivation 2.0, to continue the series.
What is Motivation 2.0 and what makes it different from motivation as talked about and taught about in time past? Let me answer by asking a few questions. Today, as a people, are we more motivated or less motivated? Compared to just twenty years ago, are we better or worse? Is what we are doing turning us into a motivated people that can’t work hard enough or fast enough?
Are we all excited to jump out of bed and get to work and tackle whatever project is on tap for the day?
I don’t think so and in fact, I think it might be defined as insanity, and you all know the definition of insanity; to keep doing what you’ve always done and expect different results. Is that what we are doing today with our methods? We keep reading the books and listening to the tapes and CDs. We keep going to the seminars and buying the workbooks and t-shirts.
So, is it working? Look around you and tell me what you see. Are the people around you excited and motivated to do their best? Are they showing leadership qualities that inspire and encourage those around them?
I think that a new form of motivation is something we need to explore … together.
