Americans fail at setting and achieving goals. New Years resolutions seem to be the most broken goals made each year. The reason is that the goals are not true goals complying with the SMART profile.
By saying you are going to lose weight and exercise more, you are setting yourself up for failure. Read this great article on goal setting and you will see what I mean.
