Enthusiasm and Positive Attitude

December 17th, 2005 · 1 Comment

In real life, staying positive and enthusiastic is difficult and anyone saying differently is fooling himself. Even the most positive people I know, have days where you can see the strain in their eyes as they work to stay enthusiastic. But they try…

If you can’t keep up a positive attitude, do you have a character flaw? Are you somehow less a person? Is it contagious?

The answers are, no, no, yes! You do not have a character flaw and are not less a person, but it is contagious. A bad attitude is something passed around at the speed of light, and can take an entire office down before lunch. We’ve all watched this happen.

WHAT NOT TO DO
If things have been going poorly, your mood is down, and you are feeling blue (I feel a song coming on), don’t feed the mood. Do not fall prey to feeling sorry for yourself: realize what is happening and begin to do something about it. Action is a great remedy for a poor attitude but inaction will keep you moping around longer than necessary. The last thing you want to do is hide at home with the lights out and sad music playing.

WHAT DO YOU DO?
If you get down, how do you recover? What can you do to rebuild the enthusiasm and get back to your old self? Is there a routine you can put together to help get yourself back on track? Yes, there is something you can do. Some are geared female and some for male (you should be able to tell)

    1. Go do one of your favorite things
        a. go window shopping
        b. head to the nearest motorcycle shop
        c. go look at new cars
        d. buy a new pair of red shoes
        e. head to CompUSA to troll gadgets
        f. head to the antique shop to troll for old stuff
    2. Put on some classic “rock ‘n roll” and get your groove on.
        a. Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels: “Devil with the Blue Dress On”
        b. Doobie Brothers: “China Grove”
        c. CCR: “Green River”
        d. Well, you get the idea, rock on… and keep it upbeat
    3. Call or go see a friend that is always in a great mood.
    4. Go find some puppies to play with.
    5. Start a blog and use it for therapy.
    6. Draw hop scotch boxes on the sidewalk and challenge the neighborhood kids.
    7. Go buy a triple scoop ice cream cone lick it slowly and enjoy.
    8. Take your dog to the park with a Frisbee

Enthusiasm is a big part of motivation and positive attitudes. It is important to have a positive attitude to achieve excellence. How much is mental and how much is physical? Does it really matter? Both parts play a very important role and neither should be neglected.

The most important thing, is to be aware of when that funk hits. If you realize its presence, you can start the counter attacks. Throw on the music and a favorite pair of jeans and drive the bad attitude away.

Now just do it…
