Why Motivation & Leadership?

November 22nd, 2005 · No Comments

Why do I care so much about motivation and leadership? Why do I read and research and spend time browsing websites and blogs for tips on these subjects? Why a blog and podcast on motivation?

Those are questions that are easier to ask than to answer. I have alluded to the fact before, that I have been motivated improperly and that is the reason. That, of course, is only part of the reason. It goes deeper than that with most of us. Why are you interested in the subject enough to read this or other blogs, and listen to the podcast?

Here are a few thoughts I have on the topic.

A lot of our motivation must come from within ourselves, but can be greatly affected by leaders, both good and bad. An example would be, if you really dislike your job and your boss, it is difficult to stay motivated and working to make a difference at work. However, if you love your job and your boss, think how easy it is to get up every morning and head to work, because you anticipate the rewards that await you each day. You can’t wait to get started and great days are produced because of enthusiasm and positive attitudes.

Leadership and motivation tie so closely together, that it is difficult to separate them from each other. Not that their definitions are the same or that they define each other, but that true leaders know how to motivate and true motivation can be inspired by a great leader.

Often the mistake is made in assigning leadership by political office, or profession, or gender or even age. That is a quick path to dissappointment and is not the direction to look for leadership. My definition of a leader is one who is willing to step up and make a difference, especially in people’s lives. I’m talking real difference and not just lip service. This means that position in a company or length of service with a company does not bestow the moniker, “leader” on any person. It is an action verb and must be done regularly.

It takes practice to become a leader and it takes practice to get motivated, even to motivate ourselves. Without practice, it is hard to spring from bed every morning and declare it to be a good day. It is hard to keep up the enthusiasm when things don’t go the way you would like. It’s difficult to accept that some people don’t have your best interest at heart. That’s why it takes practice, and practice and more practice. If if were easy, there would be no sluggards or clock watchers at your work location. Everyone would be productive and when finishing one job, would jump up and find another to get started on, and the harder the better.

Doesn’t sound like your place of work? Mine either, but like I said, it takes hard work and practice. So what should you do, what should you practice, to become a motivated leader?

Here are a few ideas…

Diligence on the job, become a mentor, provide direction and encouragement to others…that is the beginning of leadership.

A willingness to pass on your knowledge, wisdom and passion, to those that are want to learn, without reservation or hesitation…that is the beginning of leadership.

Wanting to help someone learn a new job or boost someone’s spirits, when they are down…that is the beginning of leadership.
